Our program may change depending on the needs of our group. We welcome your feedback and co-creation throughout the experience.
Day One: Thursday, October 29Landing with Grief
We’ll build our retreat container with gentle intention and care, getting to know each other as humans and our unique fingerprints of loss and grief. Alongside our daily practice of yoga and sound healing, we will build our ofrenda, altar of loved ones together, weaving together a collective tapestry of trust and grief.

Day Two: Friday, October 30Music will take you back home. Inspired by somatic music therapy, we will introduce a practice called the Song Tapestry where each person will be invited to share a song that reminds them of their loved one. This can be a recording, an acapella solo or shared harmony with instruments. You’re always welcome to simply listen. May this day be an Ave Maria.

Day Three: Saturday, October 31Dancing with Grief
You’re invited to move to the musicality of grief in a compassionate space, inspired by Ecstatic Dance, a freeform, unchoreographed movement practice. The intention is to create a loving space to release and process the depths of your emotions, with the support of a heart-opening cacao ceremony. No prior dance or movement experience required, come as you are.

Day Four: Sunday, November 1Praying & Being with Grief
We’ll build on our ofrenda, our altar practice from the first day, bringing nature elements from Sayulita. You’re invited to write a prayer, a poetic eulogy in honor of your loved one, while being witnessed and held in community. We’ll also discuss how to integrate grief into your daily and public life. In the evening, we’ll integrate our retreat container with the wider town celebrations for Los Muertos. Welcome to New Year’s Eve for the bereaved.

Day Five: Monday, November 2Surfing with Grief
We’ll close our grief container on the beach, at Playa De Los Muertos, a sacred place that played a pivotal role in Mel’s healing journey. You are invited to take part in a Paddle Out, a surf ritual in honor of those who have passed. No surf experience required, you’re welcome to swim or simply rest on the beach and be with the magical healing power of the water. We’ll close in the practice of community and gentle integration.

About your retreat leaders
Melissa Andrada
Melissa Andrada (mel - they/them) is an expressive arts healer and yoga teacher whose purpose is supporting people to transform trauma, oppression and suffering into art, healing and belonging. Bringing together the magic of musicality and movement, Mel’s offerings create a heart-centered space for people to feel the depths of their grief, emotions and humanity and heal towards wholeness and joy.
Take pride in who you are. As a queer Filipine-American born in Nigeria who came to the States as an undocumented immigrant, Mel is committed to uplifting communities from historically resilient backgrounds. As a survivor of sexual violence and big T trauma, Mel aspires to co-create a trauma-sensitive, survivor-centered space, deeply listening and attuning to the unique needs and bodies in the room. They are constantly learning and currently completing a second masters in Expressive Arts Therapy at the California Institute of Integral Studies, with a focus on music and dance movement therapy.
Mel has completed 1000+ hours of trauma, somatics and yoga teacher training, with organizations and individuals that include Staci Haines & the Strozzi Institute, Mushim Ikeda & East Bay Meditation’s Practice in Transformative Action, Bessel van der Kolk and Trauma Research Foundation. Their approach to space holding also has been influenced by Satya de La Paz, Stephanie Parker, Hala Khouri, Sophia Mallie, Tako Oda and Dr. Albert Wong.
Outside of teaching yoga and sound healing, Mel co-leads Fairground, a mental health & wellness collective focused on supporting organizations to create cultures of joy and psychological safety within the workplace. Bringing spirituality and social justice into business and strategy, Mel also is a keynote speaker who gives motivational talks centered on empowering queer BIPOC communities at places that have included Out in Tech, The New York Times and Lead Dev. Bringing grounded pragmatism to social and organizational change at scale, their past career has spanned corporate brand strategy, learning & development and product operations for 100+ organizations and 100,000+ people across ten countries. Through sound healing, yoga and strategy, Mel aspires to co-build bridges that nourish a more equitable and loving society.
Sol Garcia Jones
Sol Garcia Jones (they/ them) is an educator, facilitator, creative, and healer. Their experience with grief began in high school after losing their madrino and Uncle, Mike Garcia. Their desire for leading healing spaces for Black and brown folks and queer folks started as a dream in college but developed further when they began supporting and empowering leaders in their education work and in grad school. They were drawn to powerful healing arts forms such as Theater of the Oppressed, ritual, and transformative justice circles. Sol became a caretaker for their mother in 2019 and proudly held that title until their mother’s passing in 2025. Sol’s grief journey is the center of their world currently and they navigate this in community, gardening time, and through grief poetry and storytelling. They are currently working on their first novel, an Indigenous fantasy inspired by the Native peoples of the Bay Area.

We honor all grief and all losses. This retreat is focused on the grief of the bereaved. This retreat centers families and individuals who tragically and unexpectedly lost a loved one.
We aspire to create an equitable and inclusive space that especially honors the underserved needs of queer families and families of color.

The closest airport is Puerto Vallarta, about an hour away from Sayulita. We can help organize taxis and transportation.

We recommend developing a daily somatic grounding practice, such as but not limited to, yoga, martial arts, dance, hiking, swimming, at least one month before retreat begins.
We recommend working 1:1 with a trusted therapist, coach or healer before arriving at retreat. We can offer suggestions if you’re looking for someone.

We will offer grounding practices rooted in yoga, meditation and music therapy if you are feeling overwhelmed with big and difficult emotions.
If you need 1:1 support, we are here to support you. The ocean and jungle are here to hold your pain. We can recommend massage therapists and bodyworkers who can help you get grounded.
